No matter your age or how many years you’ve been driving, everyone remembers their first car.
Many hold that memory dear to their hearts and reflect upon their first vehicle fondly.
For 55-year safe-driver and proud UPSer Tom Camp, a 1964 Ford UPS package car may not have been his very first UPS car—but it’s pretty darn close to the package car he first commandeered when he began his UPS career in 1962.
The Tom Camp Special
Restoring life to a vintage car is not just an American ideal—it’s a worldwide obsession for many people—old and young.
But restoring a UPS package car that hasn’t run in more than 20 years? What?
For the New York City 43rd Street Automotive Trailer Shop Team in the UPS North Atlantic District, taking on this project was an honor. The NYC Automotive Team was comprised of Automotive Foreman Mike DiCicco, Auto Body Painter Joseph Roldan, Automotive Mechanic Bajram Pervizaj, Apprentice Technician Walter Martelli, and Auto Body Technician Nevel James. The crew of five put their body and soul into restoring the vintage 1964 Ford UPS package car for a very special event—the Tom Camp 55-Year Safe Driving Celebration in Livonia, Michigan.
From the Big Apple to the Motor City
The NYC team spent months overhauling the vehicle—and the end result is simply fantastic. It took many hours of hard work, meticulous care, and coordination to deliver the package car to the Motor City.
UPS Great Lakes District Automotive Manager, Scott Rice, along with his team in Detroit, helped finalize the last leg of the journey for this special ride.
“Tom Camp’s commitment to safety is unrivaled and his dedication to UPS is remarkable,” Rice said. “Dedicating this vintage car to Tom is an honor for us in the Great Lakes District as well as those in the North Atlantic District—whom of which deserve all the credit for this restoration.”
The Great Lakes District would like to extend a very special heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in making the Tom Camp 55 Year Safe Driving Celebration such a memorable event. We appreciate the hard work and dedication exhibited by the NYC Auto Mechanic team in honoring Tom and his momentous achievement through the restoration of a classic, for a classic—Tom Camp.
