ACT I

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

MUSIC: FADE IN INSPIRING PIANO

NARRATOR
70-year-old Audrey is alone at home. Her husband of 50 years has recently passed away. Her morning routine used to be filled with conversations with her husband about the news of the day, household chores, grandkids, and daily outings. The couple would read the paper together every morning in their kitchen while enjoying their coffee.

SOUND EFFECT: Coffee brewing. Coffee cup on table. Pouring coffee in cup. Sipping coffee. Placing coffee cup on table. Newspaper rustling.

NARRATOR (CONT’D)
She now drinks her morning coffee alone while reading the paper.
(PAUSE) In silence.

NARRATOR (CONT’D)
One morning while Audrey was reading the paper, she came across an article about volunteering at
the local humane society.

AUDREY
Ah! Now, that’s interesting. Volunteering might be fun. I can do the things listed in this article;
walking and feeding dogs; washing towels, bedding; helping with other various tasks. Yeah. This
will get me out of the house and interacting with people again.

ACT II

The next day, Audrey was up bright and early, as usual,
and on her way to visit the humane society.

EXT. AUDREY’S FRONT YARD - DAY

NARRATOR (CONT’D)
After a short commute, Audrey arrived at the humane society just as they were opening.

SOUND EFFECT: Car driving. Turn signal. Car turns off. Open and close car door. Footsteps. Open humane society front door. Bell jingles. Footsteps.
MUSIC: FADE OUT

KRISTIN
Well, good morning. Welcome to the Huron Valley Humane Society.
My name is Kristin. How can I help you today?
AUDREY
Good morning, Kristin. I’m Audrey. I read your ad in the newspaper and I think I would really enjoy volunteering here. How do I sign up?
KRISTIN
That’s great to hear. I can help you sign up. Let me get an application for you. Do you have a lot
of experience with animals?

MUSIC: FADE IN CLASSICAL VIOLIN AND PIANO

AUDREY
Well, yes, as a matter of fact, I do.
My husband and I...well, we’ve had dogs our entire lives and
while raising our children.

AUDREY (CONT’D)
We even had a dog up until a few years ago. He lived for fifteen wonderful years and was one of the
many loves of our lives.

KRISTIN
I am thrilled that you are here to volunteer. We need people like you who have experience with
animals. The more, the merrier. Would your husband be interested in volunteering as well?

AUDREY (QUIETLY SPOKEN)
Oh. Well...my husband recently passed away, dear.

KRISTIN
(Sorrowfully)
I’m so sorry to hear your husband passed away.
(Apologetically)
What did you say your name was again?
AUDREY
Audrey, dear.

MUSIC: FADE OUT

ACT III

I/E. LIVING ROOM/DRIVEWAY - DAY
MUSIC: FADE IN INSPIRING PIANO

NARRATOR
The next morning, Audrey was up bright and early, as usual. But today, she had a feeling of renewed purpose. Volunteer work or not, Audrey viewed her time at the humane society as a job - and she took her work seriously.

SOUND EFFECT: Jingling keys. Front door opens. Footsteps on pavement. Car door opens and shuts. Keys. Ignition. Seatbelt fastened. Car driving. Sound of blinker. Sound of Traffic.

NARRATOR (CONT’D)
Audrey arrived at the Humane Society to begin her first day on the job.

SOUND EFFECT: Turns off car. Keys jingling. Open/close car door. Footsteps. Open humane society front door. Bell jingles. Footsteps.

MUSIC: FADE OUT
INT. HUMANE SOCIETY - DAY

AUDREY
Good morning, Kristin. It’s nice to see you today.

KRISTIN
Well good morning to you, Audrey. How are you today?

AUDREY
Perfectly splendid. Thank you for asking.
KRISTIN
That’s great to hear. Are you ready and energized to get started?

AUDREY
I couldn’t be more thrilled.

ACT IV

INT. HUMANE SOCIETY - MOMENTS LATER

SOUND EFFECTS: Footsteps. Dogs barking.

NARRATOR
Kristin gave Audrey a tour of the Humane Society and covered the tasks and responsibilities she
would have as a volunteer.

KRISTIN
And, this is the cat room. Enter at your own risk. Your work in here will be basic care. Just
ensuring the kitty litter is scooped and changed as needed. Also, keep an eye on the water bowls to
see that they are clean and filled.

SOUND EFFECT: Cat purring and meowing. Dogs barking.

AUDREY
Well, hello kitty. You sure are friendly and cute.

SOUND EFFECT: Cat meowing.

KRISTIN
(With slight laughter)
Of course, feel free to take some time to play with the kittens and cats. Most enjoy the extra
attention our volunteers give them.

KRISTIN (CONT’D)
Let’s head over to the dog kennels, shall we.

SOUND EFFECT: Footsteps. Dog barking increases.

KRISTIN (CONT’D)
Most of these dogs love their daily walks. About the walks...

MUSIC: FADE IN INSPIRING PIANO

KRISTIN (CONT’D)
If I’m assuming correctly, I’d say you can handle no more than a 40 pound dog...
and one that is not prone to pulling on a leash, correct?

AUDREY
Yes, that would be a correct assumption. That is so kind of you to ask, dear. I can handle some of
the bigger dogs, but only if they are really well behaved on a leash.

KRISTIN
Well, I have just the dog for your first dog walk here.

SOUND EFFECT: Opening and closing gate. Dogs barking.

KRISTIN (CONT’D)
He showed up here two weeks ago. Someone dropped him off hoping that we could help locate his
family. Unfortunately, we’re not having much luck without a chip. There isn’t much else we can do besides post his photo on our missing pets section on our website. The site can be successful with lots of happy reunions for lost pets, but no one has come forward for this cutie. He’s getting close to the window of becoming an adoptable pet, though.

AUDREY
Oh, that is so sad to hear no one has come forward for him. I didn’t realize you had a website to
post photos of lost pets. What a great idea. Well, for those that use a computer, that is.
(Slight chuckle)

KRISTIN
The pup’s name is Crash. He’s a small terrier mix and weighs about
20 pounds. He’s shy, but a sweet little guy. Based on your personality, I think he will warm up to
you rather quickly. Are you okay with walking Crash?

AUDREY
I am. That’s why I’m here. To help in any way that I can.

SOUND EFFECT: Dog paw steps. Dogs barking. Kennel gate opening/closing. More dog paw steps.

KRISTIN
(JOYFULLY)
Well, here he is. Hi, Crash. I have someone who is thrilled to walk you today. Crash, meet Audrey.
Audrey, meet Crash.

SOUND EFFECT: Crash sniffing Audrey

AUDREY
(SWEETLY)
Well hello, Crash. It’s nice to meet you. I have a treat for you. Would you like one?

SOUND EFFECT: Crash chewing treat.

AUDREY (CONT’D)
Aw, what a good boy. You’re so sweet.
KRISTIN
What a great start. He seems he’s warming up to you already. Here is his leash. Let’s get you two
out the door for a fun walk.

AUDREY
Thank you. I’m looking forward to getting Crash outside for some exercise. I could also benefit
from a social walk.

MUSIC: FADE OUT
ACT V

EXT. HUMANE SOCIETY - DAY

MUSIC: FADE IN UPBEAT ACOUSTIC GUITAR AND VIOLIN

SOUND EFFECTS: Gate opening/closing. Footsteps. Outdoor noise. Birds chirping. Dog leash clinking.

AUDREY
You are doing so well on this walk, Crash. Someone must have properly trained you how to walk on a leash. You’re such a good boy. Let’s go sit on this bench for a few minutes to take a break from walking. Here’s some water for you, buddy.

SOUND EFFECTS: Crash slurping water from a bowl.

NARRATOR
After a long walk, Audrey and Crash made their way back to the humane society.

SOUND EFFECT: Footsteps. Leash. Door opens/closes with bell jingling. Footsteps.
NARRATOR (CONT’D)
As they entered, Audrey sees Kristin at the front desk.

KRISTIN
Oh, you’re back. How did it go?

AUDREY
Perfectly splendid, dear. Crash is a joy to be around. I could just take him home with me right
now.

KRISTIN
I’m so glad to hear the walk went so well and the two of you are hitting it off. Dogs know good
people when they meet them.

AUDREY
Well, I’ll take him back to his kennel and get to work on the other tasks on my list for today.
KRISTIN
Sounds great. Thank you, Audrey.

MUSIC: FADE OUT

ACT VI

INT. HUMANE SOCIETY - EVENING

NARRATOR
We fast forward three-and-a-half weeks.

MUSIC: FADE IN INSPIRING PIANO

NARRATOR (CONT’D)
On that Friday morning, Audrey arrived bright and early, as usual. She worked the day as she
normally would. As she and Kristin were preparing the close up for the evening, Audrey approached Kristin.

AUDREY
Kristin, dear. I know Crash is now eligible for adoption - and I think I’ve made a decision.

KRISTIN (WITH ANTICIPATION)
Oh, really? Do tell.

AUDREY
I’ve decided I would like to adopt Crash.

KRISTIN
Well, there’s only one thing I can say to that, Audrey.

AUDREY
What’s that, dear?

KRISTIN
That sounds perfectly splendid.

AUDREY
You’re catching on to my lingo.

KRISTIN
I know we are closing up now, but I can take a few extra minutes to get the adoption paperwork
started and submitted before we leave. The paperwork will be processed tomorrow morning and Crash will be all set for you to pick him up tomorrow afternoon. How does that sound?

AUDREY
It sounds perfectly splendid, of course.

KRISTIN
Consider it done.

AUDREY
Thank you, dear.

KRISTIN
No, thank you, Audrey. You’re giving Crash such a loving home.

NARRATOR
As planned, Audrey picked up Crash the next afternoon. She soon discovered that Crash wasn’t only properly trained on a leash, he was also trained to ride in a car. Harnessed in his seatbelt, his head out the window, Crash couldn’t have been happier. Once they arrived home, Crash had everything a dog could want; a dog bed, food, treats, and of course lots of squeaky toys. Crash has a new home, and in turn, Audrey has a new companion. Now every morning, Crash dutifully sits at Audrey’s feet as she reads the paper and sips her coffee. No longer alone.
