CHRIS
Hey. You made it.

Jen smiles at Chris and reaches her right hand across table. Chris extends left hand and they
embrace. Chris smiles back at Jen. Jen then fades away to show no one is really sitting there. It’s Chris’s imagination. ACT I

FADE IN:

INT. LIBRARY - DAY

Black & white still reads: Four years earlier. September, 2015. Freshman year. Footsteps
approaching through open doorway where they end at table. Camera pans upward from feet to show Jen standing at table/chairs. Chris is sitting at table doing homework with laptop, cell phone, and book on table.
JEN
Hello. Do you mind if I sit here?

CHRIS
(without looking up and with a dismissive tone and motion of hand gesture to sit)
No. I don’t mind.

Jen proceeds to sit at table. Takes out her laptop and phone and places on table. Begins to study.
After some time of both characters ignoring one another, Chris takes drink from his water bottle
and looks across the table to see Jen for the first time. He’s captivated. A few seconds pass.
CHRIS (CONT’D)
Number four.
Jen looks up at Chris.
JEN
Pardon me?

CHRIS
Number four. You’re the fourth person today to ask if they could sit there.

JEN
Oh, really. Must be a very popular spot, then.
(smiling)

CHRIS
(extends hand. smiling.) I’m Chris.

Reaching out to shake Chris’s hand.
JEN
I’m Jen. It’s nice to meet you.

CHRIS
You as well.

Both go back to working on homework but continue to exchange glances at one another. Jen notices
Chris’s Design Basic book on table.

JEN
So, you’re taking the Design Basics class?

CHRIS
Yes. I am.

JEN
I have that class, too.

CHRIS
Oh, cool. Are you also a freshman here?
JEN
Yes. First year at Cleary and my first time living in Michigan.

CHRIS
Welcome to Michigan, then. Where are you from?

JEN
California. San Francisco area to be precise. My sister and brother- in-law live here with their
three- year-old son. How about you? Where are you from?

CHRIS
Michigan. I grew up here in Howell, so I’m living at my parents house just off-campus.

JEN
That’s smart - and economical.

CHRIS
Yeah. It’s walking distance from campus. So, very convenient.
JEN
What are you majoring in?

CHRIS
Communications. I want to work for an ad agency and create commercials. You?

JEN
Marketing major.

PAIGE TURNER enters scene and walks up to table where Chris and Jen are sitting.

PAIGE
Hey, Jen.

JEN
Hi, Paige. How are you?

PAIGE
Doing well. Just working, you know.

JEN
Paige. This is Chris. Paige is my suite mate. She works here at the library and is majoring in
Human Resources.

Paige and Chris shake hands upon introduction.

PAIGE
Hi, Chris. Paige Turner. Nice to meet you.
CHRIS
You as well.

JEN
(addressing Paige)
Chris is a communications major.

PAIGE
Very cool.

CHRIS
So, your name is Paige Turner? (pause)
And you’re a librarian assistant?

PAIGE
Yeah. That’s right.
(pauses to consider the irony for a moment)

PAIGE (CONT’D)
Ha. I guess I never thought of it that way. Too funny.

JEN
(addressing Paige)
Where the heck is Keri? Have you seen her today?

PAIGE
No. She’s a tough one to keep track of, you know.
(addressing Chris) Keri’s our other suite mate.
Chris nods upwards with head and eyebrows.

JEN
(with a cheeky tone)
I told her to meet us here by the books.

All have a laugh together.

PAIGE
That’s funny.
(she chuckles)

JEN
I’m not worried. Keri’s smart. She’ll figure it out.

PAIGE
(as Paige is walking away) Well, hey. I gotta bounce before I get in trouble. Nice to meet you,
Chris.
CHRIS
You as well.

JEN
I gotta get going, too. I have class soon.

CHRIS
Cool. Do you want to meet here tomorrow and study for design class?
JEN
Sure. That sounds great.

CHRIS
May I walk you to class?
JEN
I’d like that.

Keri finally shows up at same table. Looking bewildered.

KERI
Where the heck are those guys? (pause)
They said to meet by the books.

After a moment, Keri turns and walks away with an audible sigh.
